Commercial Bee Keeping

Postby Chelanga on Tue Apr 01, 2008 12:38 pm

Hi Everyone,
I am a new member to the forum. I work for a rural development program in coastal Kenya. One of our program focus is on prompotion of bee keeping as a business and for environmental conservation.
Could anybody out let me know of the minimum number of hives per type required for commercial scale. this is for small scale farmers.
Looking forward to your feedback,
Thank you. Jonathan Kimaiyo Chelang'a

Hi Chelanga,

Hope all is well - commercial means different things to different people. What size farms are there in your area? In parts of Kenya where farms are small having about 20 hives is sufficent. In the USA as far as I can remember sideliner beekeepers (please correct me if I am wrong anyone) have up to 100 colonies and beyond this is commercial. Its all relative. Perhaps you need to come up with your own definition of what commercial means for the Kenyan coast. I know someone in Malindi with 200 colonies who is 'commercial'

Hope this helps!! Invite me there sometime!!
