Nyuki - Your African Beekeeping NewsletterJune 2005 Edition Tom Carroll Webmaster Apiconsult -----This Month in a Kenyan Apiary----- Currently the month of June is a dearth period for bees in the Nakuru, Kenya area. The weather is cooler with rain and there is a shortage of trees in flower. A number of colonies have absconded (abandoned the nest) leaving empty combs which are then attacked by wax moths. The moths lay eggs in the abandoned combs which hatch into maggots which destroy the wax. Acacia gerrardii has been in flower during the past month however there are insufficient trees in the area of the apiary to ensure a honey flow or even to ensure colonies are maintained. The major work now is to maintain colonies (with feeding if necessary) and minimize absconding until the buildup to the next honey season which starts in September. In the next newsletter I will review the last beekeeping year in Nakuru. -----Dates for your diary----- · Baraka Agricultural College, Molo, Kenya has a one-week course on general beekeeping from August 21st to 27th 2005.
