Nyuki

Your African Beekeeping Newsletter

June 2004 Edition

Welcome to this Month’s issue of Nyuki (meaning bee is Swahili Language). It’s our first!  Thank you once again to everyone who has sent in comments and suggestions for Nyuki. It is good to hear from so many of you!

-----Newsletter Objective-----

We want Nyuki to be informative and useful to you the reader involved/interested in African beekeeping development.  Please help us by sending us news items for inclusion as well as feedback on how we can make the newsletter more useful to you -  What would like you to be able to read about?  What information, news and discussion would you like us to provide?

We intend to send out the ‘Nyuki’ newsletter once monthly.

-----Beekeeping in DRC-----

In March 2004, Apiconsult carried out beekeeping training in Manono, Democratic Republic of Congo.  We trained the agricultural extension workers for GOAL, an Irish NGO.  The assignment was particularly interesting as there was little or no beekeeping in the area and there are no roads in or out.  Therefore all bee equipment had to be made using local resources.  We made top bar hives out of local timber, smokers out of tin cans and bee suits from sacking material!  The people we trained  report there are now occupied beehives, and we look forward to returning to provide further training – this time working with the bees in occupied hives!

-----Apimondia 2005-----

The next Apimondia will be held in Dublin, Ireland from 21st to 26th August 2005.  This Apimondia promises to be very interesting for beekeepers from Africa with displays planned on beekeeping in development.  It seems a long way away but if you would like to go, plan early – and keep an eye on deadlines if you intend to submit a paper.  You can keep up with the latest news at http://www.apimondia2005.org
